President Donald Trump stated on Monday that the United States could back another significant attack on Iran should it restart developing its ballistic missile or nuclear arms programs. He also issued a warning to Hamas, threatening severe consequences if the group does not disarm.
During discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, Trump emphasized the importance of advancing the delicate Gaza peace agreement he facilitated and addressing Israeli apprehensions regarding Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Trump hinted at the possibility of Tehran reviving its weapons programs following a substantial U.S. strike in June.
“We have received reports indicating that they are ramping up their arsenal and activities at different locations,” Trump mentioned to the press alongside Netanyahu. “We are closely monitoring their movements and actions, hoping they are not pursuing this path to avoid unnecessary fuel consumption for a B-2 mission, which is a lengthy 37-hour round trip.”
Following a 12-day conflict with Israel in June, Iran announced recent missile drills, while Netanyahu acknowledged being informed of these developments without seeking direct confrontation. Despite ordering strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June, Trump has since hinted at the possibility of negotiating with Tehran.
Trump, in emphasizing the need for Hamas to disarm promptly as part of the second phase of the ceasefire deal brokered in October, cautioned of dire consequences if the group fails to comply. The President expressed frustration over what he perceives as Hamas’ reluctance to meet its obligations under the agreement.
In light of the recent interactions, Trump’s remarks indicate a strong alignment with Netanyahu’s stance on security concerns, despite internal skepticism within Trump’s administration regarding Netanyahu’s commitment to the Gaza ceasefire. The two leaders exchanged praise during the meeting, with Netanyahu presenting Trump with Israel’s prestigious Israel Prize, a gesture typically reserved for Israeli citizens.
Moving forward, the initial phase of the ceasefire has entailed specific actions such as an Israeli partial withdrawal and hostage exchanges. Netanyahu’s circle disclosed demands for Hamas to return the remains of an Israeli hostage as a prerequisite for progressing to subsequent stages of the agreement.
While the ceasefire remains in place, the situation in Gaza continues to be precarious, with both Israelis and Palestinians expressing a desire for lasting peace and progression to the ceasefire’s next phases. Despite ongoing challenges, the prospect of advancing the ceasefire plan remains a focal point for all parties involved.
