Stelco’s union leader in Hamilton expresses openness to a potential government takeover of the steel company amid ongoing layoffs impacting numerous jobs. Ron Wells, the head of United Steelworkers Local 1005 representing Stelco employees in Hamilton, advocates for federal ownership of the steelmaker, currently under the ownership of U.S.-based Cleveland-Cliffs.

Wells emphasized the longstanding support from his local union for federal intervention in Stelco’s ownership, dating back to 2014 when the company entered creditor protection. He stressed the importance of bringing back members to work while contemplating the complex process of government acquisition, highlighting the desire for a dual outcome.

Recent calls from federal and Ontario NDP parties to nationalize Stelco align with similar actions taken in the United Kingdom this year to bring steel companies under public control. The federal government is exploring legal actions against Cleveland-Cliffs for allegedly breaching commitments made during the company’s acquisition in 2024 regarding maintaining specific worker numbers.

Cleveland-Cliffs CEO, Lourenco Goncalves, defends the temporary layoffs as lawful, linking them to ongoing trade negotiations between Canada and the United States. Goncalves also supports U.S. tariffs on foreign steel imports, emphasizing the company’s compliance with regulatory frameworks.

Legal expert Nicolas Lamp from Queen’s University suggests that Canadian authorities should consider taking over Stelco, emphasizing the need to evaluate the rationale behind the layoffs and comparing the actions of a potentially more sympathetic Canadian-owned entity.

Amid the layoffs, affected worker Chelsey Mastej shares her shock upon receiving a layoff notice and expresses concerns about the selection process for retaining workers. She underscores her passion for the job and solidarity with colleagues facing financial challenges, demonstrating readiness to adapt to the unfolding situation.

The local union organized meetings to assist affected workers with Employment Insurance applications and retraining opportunities. Union leader Wells acknowledges the frustrations among workers regarding job insecurity and questions the fairness of layoffs in a sector deemed essential globally.

Local 1005 plans a rally to urge Cleveland-Cliffs to honor its employment commitments, end layoffs, and advocate for stricter tariff measures to safeguard the domestic steel market. The focus remains on countering the impact of American steel imports, as highlighted by MP John-Paul Danko, who asserts the government’s resolve to support workers and bolster the Canadian steel industry.

The narrative underscores the evolving dynamics at Stelco, with stakeholders grappling with the repercussions of workforce reductions amidst broader economic and trade challenges.
