In a significant development for women’s hockey in Vancouver, the new PWHL franchise is gearing up to face off against Seattle on Nov. 21, marking the beginning of a new era for the sport in the Pacific city. The team, named the Vancouver Goldeneyes, will compete against the Seattle Torrent, according to an announcement by the PWHL. This expansion brings the league to eight teams, up from the original six, with players set to hit training camps ahead of the inaugural game.
The branding process for the two new pro women’s hockey teams commenced earlier this year when Vancouver and Seattle were identified as expansion markets. The selection of the names was a thoughtful process, as Kanan Bhatt-Shah, the PWHL’s vice president of brand and marketing, explained in an interview with CBC Sports. The inspiration for Vancouver’s name, the Goldeneyes, stems from the common goldeneye bird known for its protective nature and distinctive yellow eyes, prevalent in the region.
The Goldeneyes’ logo incorporates elements representing the bird’s characteristics, with colors reflecting the Pacific city’s essence. Vancouver’s identity symbolizes strength, unity, and resilience, capturing the spirit of the local landscape. Meanwhile, Seattle’s branding pays homage to the waterways of Washington, with the Torrent’s logo featuring a stylized “S” resembling a rush of water, inspired by the city’s natural surroundings and sporting legacy.
Although the new team gear is already available for purchase, the Vancouver and Seattle jerseys will initially feature the city names instead of the logos due to time constraints. This approach aligns with the tradition of new PWHL teams starting with city names on their jerseys before transitioning to branded jerseys in subsequent seasons. The league’s new season kicks off on Nov. 21, with exciting matchups scheduled as part of the expanded competition.
By involving community members and considering fan feedback, the PWHL has successfully integrated the essence of Vancouver and Seattle into the branding of the Goldeneyes and Torrent. The league’s proactive approach to establishing team identities from the outset sets the stage for an engaging and spirited season ahead.
