The Vancouver Landfill is set to operate for an extended period beyond its initial closure date. Originally scheduled to shut down in 2030, the landfill in Delta, B.C., which began operations in 1966, will now continue accepting waste for an additional 20 years. This extension is attributed to the settling of the land, creating more capacity for garbage disposal.
According to Paul Henderson from Metro Vancouver’s Solid Waste Services, the prolonged lifespan of the landfill will result in significant cost savings of $300 million for residents and businesses in future disposal fees. While plans for managing waste beyond 2050 remain uncertain, Henderson suggests that waste might have to be transported to B.C.’s Interior or even to the United States.
