Farmers in Vernon are adapting to water restrictions recently enforced by the Regional District of the North Okanagan and the Greater Vernon Water Utility due to critically low reservoir and lake levels. Among the regulations is a mandatory 70% reduction in water usage for all farmers, posing a significant challenge for agricultural operations.
Adrian Arts, a farmer and the executive director of the B.C. Fruit Growers’ Association, expressed concerns that such drastic water cuts could harm trees, potentially leading to long-term damage or tree loss in orchards. The association is urging government support to sustain the future of agriculture in British Columbia amid ongoing challenges faced by farmers for several consecutive years, including extreme weather events like heatwaves and freezes.
Following the implementation of restrictions in early June, officials engaged with major water consumers in the area, particularly farmers, offering opportunities for water sharing and reallocation. David Sewell from the Regional District of North Okanagan noted positive responses from farmers exploring water sharing arrangements with neighbors to mitigate the impact of the restrictions.
Despite the limitations, the community has largely cooperated with the restrictions, which include bans on non-essential activities such as lawn watering, pool filling, and boat washing. While there have been exceptions for specific uses like maintaining sports fields, overall water consumption has decreased by 48% since the restrictions came into effect, with some residents temporarily transitioning to alternative water sources to conserve surface water for agricultural purposes.
Businesses like golf courses and sports fields are utilizing reclaimed water from wastewater treatment plants, which remains unrestricted. The Greater Vernon area has seen a significant reduction in water usage, reflecting the community’s efforts to adhere to the conservation measures during this challenging period.
