William Shatner and his youngest daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, faced a challenging journey together after both being diagnosed with advanced cancer within months of each other. Shatner, the renowned 95-year-old Canadian actor famous for his portrayal of Capt. James T. Kirk on “Star Trek,” revealed his battle with Stage 4 malignant melanoma that had spread to his lungs and brain in June 2023. Around the same time, Gretsch, aged 61, discovered a lump in her breast, leading to her own cancer diagnosis.

Despite undergoing treatment concurrently, Shatner and Gretsch found solace in each other. Gretsch recalled seeking comfort from her father during her chemotherapy sessions, and he assured her that this was just a temporary setback in her life. Shatner, who received his cancer diagnosis while his daughter was still in treatment, remained composed and expressed gratitude for catching the illness in time to receive treatment.

Both Shatner and Gretsch have been cancer-free since late 2024, attributing their recovery to finding the right medical professionals. Gretsch underwent extensive chemo, a double mastectomy, and radiation therapy, while Shatner had surgery to remove a tumor on his face, followed by two years of immunotherapy targeting his lung and brain cancer.

The ordeal has left them with a newfound appreciation for life’s simple pleasures, with Shatner reflecting on the beauty of nature and cherished moments with loved ones. Despite efforts to reach out for comments, CBC News did not receive a response from Shatner before the article’s publication deadline.
