Police have taken a woman into custody following the death of a newborn discovered in a bus shelter in Longueuil, Quebec. The infant was found at a bus shelter on Chambly Road near Briggs Street. Longueuil police spokesperson Jacqueline Pierre announced the arrest of a 33-year-old woman on Monday morning. Authorities are currently assessing the woman’s mental and physical well-being.
While it has not been confirmed if the woman is the baby’s mother, there is a possibility that she may be charged with infanticide. The baby was found in a critical condition, still connected to the placenta and exposed to the cold. Paramedics from the Coopérative des techniciens ambulanciers de la Montérégie reported that the infant was unconscious but received resuscitation efforts before being transported to the hospital.
A 911 call was made around 6:30 a.m. on Monday to report the presence of a baby at the bus shelter. Immediate first aid was provided to the infant, who was then taken to the hospital for further treatment. Police urged the public to steer clear of the area as they conducted an operation, with road closures at Briggs Street eastbound and Chambly Road northbound.
Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier expressed deep concern over the abandonment and death of the newborn, highlighting the similarity to a recent case with different outcomes. In a separate incident, a newborn was found on a doorstep in Longueuil earlier this month. The city is closely following the investigation and providing necessary support to the individual being questioned during this challenging time.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the recent events, including the abandonment of the newborn at the bus shelter and the previous incident on Bourgeoys Street. The two occurrences are currently believed to be unrelated.
