Yukon voters preparing for the upcoming election will encounter an additional ballot alongside the one for their MLA selection. However, some voters have expressed their lack of knowledge about the plebiscite on electoral reform. The plebiscite will inquire whether voters prefer switching from the current first-past-the-post system to a ranked ballot system.

In a conversation with CBC News in Whitehorse, Darryl Yeo admitted his unfamiliarity with the plebiscite and was uncertain about voting “yes” or “no” due to it being his first encounter with the topic. Similarly, Nikita Bailey expressed surprise at not being informed about the issue during a recent leaders’ election forum in Whitehorse, feeling that proper community consultation was lacking. Despite the lack of information, Bailey indicated a leaning towards voting “no” on the matter.

Joshua Desmarais, another voter unaware of the plebiscite, emphasized his disillusionment with the system and declared his decision not to vote in the upcoming election at all. Liz Johnson also confirmed her lack of awareness about the plebiscite and expressed the need to understand its implications before deciding how to vote.

Despite the prevailing lack of knowledge among some voters, Dave Borud stands out as an informed voter who supports electoral reform, drawing inspiration from successful implementations in Australia and New Zealand. On the other hand, Kenneth Mayer opposes the idea of change, believing that the current system functions effectively without necessitating adjustments.

It is crucial to note that the plebiscite results are advisory and not binding, leaving the decision on whether to act upon them to the incoming government. While the Liberals and NDP have expressed willingness to implement a ranked ballot system if the plebiscite outcome favors electoral reform, the Yukon Party remains steadfast in maintaining the existing system regardless of the plebiscite result.
