Link, 47 at the time, experienced severe dehydration and heat sickness after her work shift, leading to heat stroke that landed her in the emergency room and eventually in an induced coma at Royal Inland Hospital.
This incident marked the onset of what experts dubbed the 2021 western heat dome, considered one of Canada’s deadliest weather events. The heatwave began to take shape in mid-June when Environment Canada’s forecasters identified a persistent heat pattern impacting the province. The weather system lingered due to a strong high-pressure ridge, resulting in scorching temperatures that peaked from June 26 to 29, causing distress for residents and straining emergency services.
The unbearable conditions prompted widespread impacts, with a surge in emergency calls overwhelming services. Lower Mainland paramedic Ian Tait described the harrowing experience of responding to an unprecedented number of distress calls during the peak of the heatwave. The influx of emergency calls, coupled with the record-breaking temperatures, pushed first responders to their limits.
Environment Canada reported record-breaking temperatures, with Lytton hitting a staggering 49.6 C on June 29, the highest ever recorded in Canada.
