Canadian runner Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, a two-time Olympian, has decided to retire after a successful 15-year career in track and road racing. His retirement was marked by his marathon debut in New York City, where he finished 21st in the professional men’s category with a time of two hours, 26 minutes, and 25 seconds.

Reflecting on his final race, Philibert-Thiboutot mentioned that despite starting faster than planned and feeling strong in the first half, he began to experience cramping around the 28-29 km mark, making the remainder of the race a challenging endeavor.

Throughout his career, Philibert-Thiboutot achieved personal-best times in various events, both indoors and outdoors, including setting a national record in the Canadian 10K Road Running Championships. His accomplishments also included multiple Canadian championships and notable performances at international competitions such as the NACAC Championships and the World Athletics Championships.

Despite missing out on qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Philibert-Thiboutot showcased his talent at various other events, concluding his career with a strong performance at the Paris Olympics last year.

In a similar vein, the New York City Marathon witnessed record-breaking performances in both the men’s and women’s categories. Kenyan runner Hellen Obiri set a new women’s course record, finishing in two hours, 19 minutes, and 51 seconds. In the men’s race, Benson Kipruto claimed victory in a close finish, narrowly edging out Alexander Mutiso by a fraction of a second.

The event also saw defending champions and top contenders pushing themselves to new limits, with strong performances from athletes across various categories. Notably, Eliud Kipchoge, a renowned marathoner, completed his first New York City Marathon, adding another milestone to his illustrious career.

In the wheelchair races, Marcel Hug and Susannah Scaroni emerged as dominant victors, showcasing their exceptional skills and determination in a highly competitive field.

The New York City Marathon truly proved to be a platform for extraordinary athletic achievements and memorable moments for participants and spectators alike.
