Nearly 25 years after the fatal shooting of rap icon Jam Master Jay from Run-DMC, a man confessed in court on Monday to his involvement in a long-standing murder case. Jay Bryant admitted guilt to a federal murder charge, acknowledging that he facilitated others to carry out an attack on the DJ, born as Jason Mizell.
Bryant, 52, faces a expected sentence ranging from 15 to 20 years in prison for the murder and additional drug and firearm offenses to which he previously pleaded guilty. Despite Bryant’s admission, he did not disclose the identities of the other individuals involved in the crime.
This development brings some resolution to the perplexing case, which saw two other men, Karl Jordan Jr. and Ronald Washington, convicted in 2024. However, a judge later acquitted Jordan, and Washington is currently contesting his conviction. Evidence against Bryant includes DNA found on a hat at the crime scene and witness statements indicating Bryant may have claimed responsibility for firing the gun himself.
Members of Run-DMC, including Jam Master Jay, DMC, and DJ Run, achieved significant success in the 1980s with hit songs like “It’s Tricky” and “My Adidas.” Their influence helped elevate rap music from an urban genre to mainstream popularity. The group was honored with gold- and platinum-selling albums, a Rolling Stone cover, and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
Jam Master Jay tragically lost his life at 37, when he was fatally shot in his Queens studio in 2002. The case remained unsolved for many years until the arrests of Jordan and Washington in 2020. Prosecutors alleged that the motive behind the murder was related to a failed cocaine transaction involving Mizell.
Prosecutors assert that Jordan shot Mizell while Washington prevented anyone from intervening during the attack. Both men deny these allegations, with Jordan claiming to have been at his girlfriend’s residence at the time of the shooting. Bryant’s involvement emerged later, with his DNA being linked to a hat found at the crime scene.
Despite the latest developments, the full details of the events leading to Jam Master Jay’s tragic demise are still shrouded in mystery, leaving lingering questions about the individuals responsible for the crime.
