The company that owns Ekati Diamond Mine has sought creditor protection due to a significant drop in diamond prices, leading to financial challenges. The move puts numerous jobs, payments to Indigenous communities, and the future of the mine at risk.
Arctic Canadian Diamond Company, the operator of Ekati Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories, filed for legal protection in the Supreme Court of British Columbia. This protection shields the company from creditor actions until at least May 11, allowing it to address its financial situation.
Since its establishment in 1998, Ekati Diamond Mine has seen fluctuations in its workforce, with a significant decrease in employees by March 31. Despite reaching a milestone of extracting 100 million carats of diamonds last year, the company faced financial strain, prompting the federal government to provide a $175 million loan to support operations and safeguard jobs.
Government officials, including N.W.T Industry, Tourism and Investment Minister Caitlin Cleveland, expressed concern over the situation and pledged to support affected workers and communities. The Union of Northern Workers and local MLA Robert Hawkins highlighted the challenges faced by employees and communities due to the company’s financial difficulties.
Financial documents reveal that Arctic Canadian Diamond Company is under financial distress, with liabilities totaling approximately $655 million. The company’s inability to stabilize operations and meet financial obligations poses a threat to its stakeholders and the Ekati Mine’s ongoing activities.
The company attributed the financial crisis to a sharp decline in diamond prices, citing global factors such as the emergence of lab-grown diamonds, reduced demand from China, and tariff impacts. The company reported a significant decline in diamond sales revenue from over $600 million in 2024 to about $253 million in the following year.
As the Ekati Diamond Mine navigates these challenges, government officials and stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation and working to ensure support for affected employees and communities during this uncertain period.
