Britney Spears, represented by her lawyer Michael A. Goldstein, pleaded guilty on Monday to a reduced charge, avoiding jail time in a case where she was accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs in Southern California. The 44-year-old singer did not attend the court session in Ventura County. The plea agreement, known as a “wet reckless,” involves a year of probation, mandatory DUI education, and state-imposed fines.
This plea deal is standard for individuals with no prior DUI record, no traffic accidents, and a low blood alcohol level, according to the county district attorney’s office. It is particularly common for defendants who have displayed a commitment to addressing their issues and seeking help, similar to Spears, who voluntarily entered a substance abuse treatment facility in April.
Goldstein expressed that while nobody is pleased about pleading guilty, it was a necessary step to move forward. He commended the district attorney for acknowledging Britney’s efforts to better herself. Following her completion of rehab, Spears returned home, refuting claims that she left prematurely. Goldstein mentioned uncertainty about Spears’ future plans.
During the hearing, Spears was placed on summary probation, which does not require regular meetings with a parole officer. She consented to waiving her Fourth Amendment rights regarding searches and sobriety tests during traffic stops, but this does not extend to her residence, as clarified by the judge.
District Attorney Erik Nasarenko stressed that Spears took full responsibility for her actions, emphasizing the seriousness of DUI offenses. He outlined the court-mandated requirements for Spears, including ongoing substance abuse treatment, therapy sessions, and monthly psychiatric evaluations, to prevent any future incidents.
Charged with one count of misdemeanor DUI, Spears did not have to be present in court for her arraignment. The incident occurred near her residence in Ventura County, where she was arrested on March 4. Her representatives previously expressed hope for positive change in her life following the arrest. Spears has not commented on the charges since her arrest.
The California Highway Patrol reported that Spears was pulled over for erratic driving on U.S. 101, where she displayed signs of impairment, underwent field sobriety tests, and was subsequently arrested. Authorities confirmed the presence of alcohol and drugs in her system but did not disclose specific substances or her blood alcohol level.
