“Massacres and Humanitarian Crisis Grip El Fasher”

Massacres persist in El Fasher, Sudan, following the recent takeover by rebel forces, which ended an 18-month siege and raised concerns about a severe humanitarian crisis. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized control of the army’s headquarters in the city, marking a significant advancement in their quest for dominance over Darfur, the vast western region of Sudan. Satellite imagery indicates the presence of bodies in the streets, with reports suggesting a high death toll. However, due to disrupted communications and limited information from refugees, the full extent of the situation remains unclear.

Aid workers and officials express deep worries for those who managed to escape the city, particularly women, children, and the elderly, who face threats of extortion, rape, and violence during their perilous journeys. Tom Fletcher, UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief, emphasized the urgent need for action to address the dire levels of human suffering in El Fasher and Darfur.

The ongoing civil war in Sudan, spanning over two and a half years, has been described by the UN as the most significant humanitarian crisis globally, characterized by rampant sexual violence, famine, indiscriminate combat in civilian areas, and the displacement of millions. Fletcher highlighted the failure of protection and the international community’s responsibility to uphold international law in the face of the crisis.

Concerns have been raised by aid groups and activists about the potential for ethnic violence as the RSF, rooted in the Janjaweed militia responsible for genocide in Darfur in the early 2000s, gains more control. The current situation in El Fasher echoes the atrocities witnessed in Darfur two decades ago, but with a noticeable lack of robust global response, indicating a crisis of apathy, according to Fletcher.

Numerous individuals, like Nadia Taha, have lost contact with family members in El Fasher, leading to fear and uncertainty about their safety. Taha shared a heartbreaking account of her brother’s death at the hands of the RSF, underscoring the personal tragedies unfolding amidst the conflict.

While the RSF denies harming civilians, recent allegations, including the reported deaths of hundreds at El Fasher’s Saudi Hospital, have prompted investigations and acknowledgments of abuses by the military. The involvement of external actors like the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in supporting the RSF has raised additional concerns, with accusations of exacerbating the conflict.

As the crisis escalates, displaced individuals face treacherous journeys, with some undertaking long and dangerous walks to seek safety in Khartoum or other towns. The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, with reports of systematic killings and ethnic cleansing in El Fasher, as highlighted by satellite images and expert analyses.

The international community faces mounting pressure to intervene and address the escalating crisis in Sudan, with calls for accountability, protection of civilians, and urgent humanitarian assistance to mitigate the suffering of those affected by the conflict.
