On a recent evening, Taylor Heise and Abbey Murphy showcased their skills in Team USA women’s hockey’s 4-1 victory over Canada in the Rivalry Series. Despite their impressive performance, they redirected the attention to their teammate Laila Edwards, who received a warm welcome during her homecoming. Edwards, a 21-year-old forward-turned-defenseman from Cleveland Heights, is the first Black female player to represent Team USA.
Edwards, who recently recovered from a knee injury sustained during a college game, played a crucial role in the match by providing the primary assist for the American’s first goal. Her point shot was skillfully tipped in by Heise, resulting in a tied score midway through the first period. Edwards expressed her excitement and gratitude for the support she received from her team and the crowd.
Heise and Murphy’s stellar performances, along with goalkeeper Aerin Frankel’s impressive 26 saves, contributed to Team USA’s victory. Murphy netted three goals, with Heise providing assists for each one. The Americans have now secured three consecutive wins against Canada, extending their winning streak from the recent world championships in the Czech Republic.
In the upcoming games, Fillier scored Canada’s only goal, while Gascon, making her national team debut, made 22 saves. The teams will face off again in Buffalo, New York, before concluding the series with two games in Edmonton, Alberta. Despite Canada’s status as the defending Olympic champions, the Americans are determined to continue their winning streak and prepare for the upcoming Milan-Cortina Games in February.
Edwards, who has already achieved significant milestones in her career, is poised to make her Olympic debut. Coach John Wroblewski praised her composure and talent, highlighting her contributions to the team’s success. Edwards, who was recently honored by NBA player Larry Nance wearing her USA hockey jersey, expressed her gratitude for the recognition and support from her hometown of Ohio.
