The United States faced criticism from the European Union, France, and Germany for imposing visa bans on European individuals engaged in combating online hate and disinformation. The EU expressed readiness to react firmly against what it deemed as unjustified actions.

Among the five European citizens subject to the visa bans was Thierry Breton, a former EU commissioner from France, accused by the U.S. administration of stifling freedom of speech and unfairly targeting American tech companies with excessive regulations. The European Commission strongly denounced the U.S. move, emphasizing the significance of freedom of expression as a core value shared between Europe and the United States.

The visa bans are expected to deepen rifts between Washington and certain European capitals on various issues, such as free speech, defense, immigration, far-right politics, trade, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. These sanctions follow a warning in a recent U.S. National Security Strategy document about Europe facing potential “civilizational erasure” and the need for strategic adjustments to maintain its alliance with the U.S.

One of the figures targeted, Thierry Breton, played a pivotal role in shaping the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), a significant legislative initiative aimed at enhancing online safety. The DSA, which irritated U.S. officials, seeks to hold tech giants more accountable for addressing illegal content like hate speech and child sexual abuse material.

In response, Washington criticized the EU for what it perceives as overly restrictive measures on freedom of expression while combatting hateful speech, misinformation, and disinformation. The European Commission defended its right to regulate economic activities and requested further clarification from the U.S. regarding the visa bans, signaling a willingness to swiftly counter any unwarranted actions.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused the targeted individuals of orchestrating efforts to coerce American platforms into censoring viewpoints they disagree with, alleging collaboration with foreign entities to suppress American speech. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the U.S. measures as attempts to undermine European digital sovereignty and emphasized the DSA’s role in promoting fair competition and enforcing legal standards online.

Germany’s Justice Ministry expressed solidarity with the German activists subjected to the visa bans, labeling the restrictions as unacceptable and reaffirming that decisions on digital regulations in Germany and Europe are independent of Washington. A spokesperson from the Global Disinformation Index condemned the visa bans as an authoritarian assault on free speech, characterizing them as immoral, unlawful, and un-American.

The U.S. visa bans have sparked international criticism, with various stakeholders denouncing the actions as detrimental to democratic values and free speech principles. The ongoing tensions highlight the complexities of transatlantic relations and differing perspectives on regulating online content and safeguarding digital rights.
