Less than seven days following an unexpected cabinet reorganization that left her excluded, Becky Druhan, the MLA for Lunenburg West, announced that she is departing from the Progressive Conservative caucus to serve as an Independent in the Nova Scotia Legislature due to differing principles she holds compared to the leadership.
In an interview with CBC News, Druhan clarified that her choice was not driven by Premier Tim Houston’s decision to remove her from the justice portfolio or any specific policy disagreements. She emphasized that the decision was based on a divergence in principles between her own views and those of the leadership.
Druhan, who entered office in 2021 as part of the team led by Houston, declined to provide details on the specifics of these differences or whether they were solely related to the premier or extended to other key members of his team.
Acknowledging that she was offered an alternate portfolio before the cabinet reshuffle, Druhan disclosed that she declined the offer, citing the same discrepancy in principles. She expressed gratitude for her government colleagues and conveyed her best wishes to them.
While Druhan conveyed her decision through a formal letter to the premier, indicating they have not engaged in direct communication, Houston’s office issued a statement expressing well wishes for her future endeavors.
The recent cabinet alterations included the transition of Scott Armstrong to the justice portfolio, leading to a change in the PC’s seat count to 42 in the legislature, with Independent representatives now totaling two. Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin, the Independent MLA for Cumberland North, voiced her readiness to collaborate with Druhan wherever their objectives align, commending Druhan’s decision as one of integrity and determination.
Reacting to Druhan’s move, NDP Leader Claudia Chender suggested that this decision raises concerns about the priorities and practices of the Houston government. Druhan asserted that her primary focus now is on effectively representing her constituency as an Independent MLA and supporting government initiatives that align with the needs of Lunenburg West and Nova Scotia at large.
While uncertain about her potential reoffering in the upcoming provincial election, Druhan affirmed her commitment to serving her community diligently and with integrity, highlighting her unchanged dedication to representing her constituency faithfully.
