Happy Valley-Goose Bay’s fire chief has expressed concern over a series of suspected arsons that impacted four separate buildings within a few hours on Friday night. Fire Chief Brad Butler described the incidents as unprecedented, emphasizing the challenges faced by his crews in responding to the fires.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is currently investigating the blazes, which began on Palliser Crescent before spreading to locations on Cabot Street, Hamilton River Road, and an office building. The fires raised suspicions of foul play, particularly at the second site, an abandoned house on Cabot Street.
Approximately 12 to 15 firefighters tackled each fire, encountering logistical difficulties due to the dispersed locations across the town. The intentional nature of the fires is strongly suspected, with significant damage reported, including the complete destruction of a residential property. Fortunately, no individuals were harmed in the incidents.
Authorities are appealing for information and potential surveillance footage from specific areas on the night of the fires. Happy Valley-Goose Bay Mayor Bert Pomeroy urged residents to assist the RCMP by sharing any relevant details to aid in the investigation.
The community remains on alert following the arson incidents, prompting a call for vigilance from local officials. Residents are encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure the safety and security of the town.
