Americans are gearing up to mark 250 years of independence with a festive rendition of “Happy Birthday.” The official lineup for the celebrations in Washington D.C. features a nostalgic twist with ’90s one-hit wonders headlining the event. Attendees of Freedom 250’s Great American State Fair will groove to hits like Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby” and C+C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” at the I Love the 90’s! concert on June 26.

However, rapper Young MC has decided to opt-out of performing at the event, citing concerns over its alleged political affiliations. In a Facebook post, Young MC expressed disappointment over the lack of transparency regarding the event’s political ties, despite organizers claiming it to be non-partisan. Similarly, the iconic duo Milli Vanilli also clarified that they will not be part of the show, as previously announced.

While Freedom 250 promotes the event as a celebration of the American spirit, criticism has arisen over perceived glorification of U.S. President Donald Trump in various activities commemorating the nation’s 250th birthday. The controversy extends to efforts such as featuring Trump’s face on coins, bills, and even a special passport. Additionally, a UFC fight card set to take place on the White House South Lawn on Trump’s birthday has stirred attention and backlash.

The star-studded event lineup includes performances by Vanilla Ice, C+C Music Factory, and other musical acts throughout the fair from June 25 to July 10. Despite the initial roster, multiple withdrawals have left uncertainty about the final performers. Notably, Morris Day of The Time, initially announced as part of the lineup, has confirmed he will not be performing, dispelling rumors to the contrary.

In an Instagram post, C+C Music Factory member Freedom Williams addressed speculation about his involvement in the event, asserting his commitment to the concert despite initial hesitations. Expressing defiance against those objecting to his participation, Williams clarified his stance against Trump. Country singer Martina McBride, The Commodores, and Bret Michaels of Poison have also withdrawn from their scheduled appearances, citing concerns over the event’s evolving nature and lack of alignment with their expectations.

The evolving narrative surrounding America’s 250th anniversary celebrations raises questions about the event’s underlying purpose and potential political undertones. Amidst the musical fervor and festivities, the controversy underscores the delicate balance between commemorating a historical milestone and navigating contemporary political landscapes.
