U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he has directed the Pentagon to start preparing for potential military intervention in Nigeria, citing concerns over the government’s failure to address the persecution of Christians in the West African nation.

In a social media post, Trump warned that if the Nigerian authorities do not take action to stop the killings of Christians, the U.S. will halt all aid to Nigeria and may consider military intervention to eradicate the Islamic extremist groups responsible for the violence. He instructed the Department of Defense to be ready for possible action, emphasizing that any intervention would be swift and forceful.

The statement from Trump followed Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s response to Trump’s earlier designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” for its alleged inability to protect Christians. Tinubu defended Nigeria, stating that the country upholds religious freedom and opposes religious persecution, with constitutional guarantees protecting citizens of all faiths.

Trump’s remarks about the threat faced by Christianity in Nigeria and the role of radical Islamists in the violence echo recent calls by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz to classify Nigeria as a violator of religious freedom due to reported incidents of mass killings of Christians.

Nigeria’s population of 220 million is evenly split between Christians and Muslims, with ongoing security challenges posed by groups like Boko Haram. The violence in Nigeria is multifaceted, stemming from religious, ethnic, and resource-based conflicts. While Christians are often targeted, the majority of victims are Muslims in the northern regions of the country, where most attacks occur.

The Nigerian government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting all citizens regardless of their religious beliefs, emphasizing the importance of celebrating the country’s diversity as a strength. Nigeria was previously placed on the U.S. list of countries of particular concern for religious freedom violations in 2020, a designation that was lifted in 2023 to improve diplomatic relations between the two nations.
