An esteemed general store in Prince Edward Island is undergoing a change in ownership after being managed by the same family for more than 80 years. Clow’s Red and White, located in Hampshire, is renowned for its diverse range of products, with a particular highlight being its meat pies, which have evolved into a cherished holiday tradition for numerous Islanders.

Over the course of eight decades in operation, the store has garnered a loyal clientele who frequent the establishment for its homemade beef jerky and peameal bacon, in addition to the famous meat pies. Previously overseen by the Clow family since the 1940s, the store has now been passed on to new proprietors.

Norman Clow, who has been at the helm of the store since 2015, reminisced about the store’s inception in 1942 by his grandfather’s uncle, Judd Clow. The store’s legacy, spanning multiple generations of the Clow family, is prominently displayed through historical photographs and paintings adorning the walls, showcasing the store’s evolution over time.

Reflecting on his long-standing connection to the store since childhood, Clow expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community. He highlighted the satisfaction derived from meeting customer expectations and emphasized the community’s integral role in his life.

With the transition to new ownership, Clow assured customers that the store’s essence would remain unchanged. He affirmed that the existing staff would be retained, and the store’s signature products, including meat pies, potted meat, and beef jerky, would continue to be crafted with the same dedication and quality.

New co-owner Dwijesh Patel, who has been familiarizing himself with the store operations in recent months, pledged to uphold the store’s heritage and preserve its offerings. Emphasizing the importance of community connections, the new owners expressed their commitment to maintaining the store’s traditions while striving to enhance its standing in the community.

As Clow prepares to step back from his role, he assured customers that the transition would be seamless, with the only noticeable change being a new face behind the counter. Despite mixed emotions about departing from the store, Clow expressed confidence in the new owners’ ability to carry on the store’s legacy.

Looking ahead, the store will proceed with its preparations for the upcoming holiday season, with staff gearing up to fulfill Christmas orders. Clow will remain onboard to assist the new owners during their initial Christmas season before taking a well-deserved break. Expressing gratitude to the customers he has served over the years, Clow conveyed his hope that this transition is not a final farewell but rather a continuation of the relationships built within the community.
