Former U.S. President Barack Obama has enlisted a star-studded lineup for the inaugural event of his new cultural hub. Icons like Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Bono and the Edge of U2, Eddie Vedder, and Bruce Springsteen are set to grace the stage at the grand opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago’s South Side.
The live-streamed unveiling of the center, which features a museum, library, and a sports arena with an NBA-size court, is scheduled for June 18 at noon ET. This event precedes the public opening on Juneteenth, a significant U.S. federal holiday.
While Obama’s event garners attention, current U.S. President Donald Trump is projected to be absent. Trump had previously criticized the center, referring to it as “badly delayed and over-budget.” Trump has been preoccupied with the Freedom 250 initiative this summer, designed to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, hosting events like the White House’s Freedom 250 UFC affair on his 80th birthday.
This programming has drawn backlash, with critics accusing Trump of leveraging official events for political gain. Trump’s redirection from the bipartisan America 250 committee to the parallel Freedom 250 committee has created confusion. Notably, some artists have pulled out of anniversary events associated with Trump, including the Great American State Fair, citing concerns about the event’s alignment with his brand.
Remaining performers at the Fair include Flo Rida and Vanilla Ice, after several others withdrew. Trump responded to the withdrawals by suggesting a cancellation and proposed a rally on the National Mall, boasting himself as the “Number One Attraction.”
Amidst these events, America 250 continues its festivities, such as the America’s Block Party concert featuring the Smashing Pumpkins and Queen Latifah. The proximity of these celebrations coincides with a recent court order to remove Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center’s facade, a move initiated by Trump during his tenure.
Experts see a competitive dynamic between Obama and Trump’s engagements, emphasizing the cultural significance and global esteem attached to the Obamas. Conversely, Trump’s legitimacy and appeal are questioned, with observers noting a disparity in public perception and acceptance between the two figures.
Despite the anticipation surrounding Obama’s center, there have been criticisms regarding its design and absence of a National Archives and Records Administration facility. The campus is expected to draw a substantial number of visitors annually, featuring amenities like a public library, basketball court, garden, and playground.
