A well-known figure within the local community is causing excitement in the urban area. Recent reports of a red-headed woodpecker at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary have sparked a frenzy among birdwatchers, drawing numerous enthusiasts to the popular park daily to catch a glimpse of the uncommon bird.

Sophia Su, a dedicated birdwatcher, attended her mother’s graduation ceremony at the University of Calgary before heading straight to southeast Calgary in search of the woodpecker. Su shared, “My family found my interest peculiar, but they indulged me. I aim to spot 200 different species by year-end, so every sighting is significant.”

Locating the bird was effortless for Su, as a group of photographers with large cameras had gathered around it. She described the moment, “I approached and witnessed the striking black and white wings. Finally, I saw the vibrant red head. It was a stunning bird. I was overjoyed.”

The red-headed woodpecker’s presence has garnered immense attention due to its unusual appearance in Calgary, a location far from its typical habitat. Being a “vagrant” species, the bird occasionally strays from its usual range, which primarily includes southern Ontario and Manitoba, with smaller populations in Saskatchewan and Quebec. Jody Allair from Birds Canada mentioned that the woodpecker’s attraction to Inglewood is likely due to the sanctuary’s mix of mature trees and open spaces, which align with its preferences.

Despite being an endangered species in Canada, with less than 5,000 left and a significant decline in population from 1970 to 2014, there are positive signs for the red-headed woodpecker. Recent data indicates a resurgence in the Canadian prairies, suggesting a potential recovery for the species. Allair expressed optimism, stating, “If the population trend continues positively, especially in Western Canada, the red-headed woodpecker may no longer be classified as endangered, which would be a significant achievement.”

It is crucial for bird enthusiasts to observe the woodpecker respectfully without causing stress or disturbance. Allair emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe distance and not interfering with the bird’s natural behavior. Celebrating the woodpecker’s presence as a conservation success story, he highlighted the need to appreciate and protect these magnificent creatures for future generations.
