The New York Giants have dismissed head coach Brian Daboll, a native of Welland, Ontario, following their 2-8 record after a defeat to Chicago. Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka has been appointed as the interim head coach. The decision was made by team ownership after the Giants suffered a 24-20 loss to the Bears, blowing another late lead. General manager Joe Schoen will lead the search for the team’s next head coach.
Owners John Mara and Steve Tisch stated, “We have decided that, at this time, it is in our best interest to make a change at the head coaching position.” The Giants have experienced a disappointing run in the past few seasons, failing to meet their franchise expectations. Despite the change in leadership, the rest of Daboll’s coaching staff, including defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, will remain in their current roles.
The Giants have faced a four-game losing streak since their victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, with notable collapses such as squandering an 18-point lead in the final minutes against Denver. Daboll, in his first head coaching role in the league, had a mixed tenure with a record of 20-40-1. His coaching performance ranked poorly with a .336 winning percentage, leading to his dismissal.
Daboll, who had previously served as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator, faced mounting pressure regarding his job security. In the wake of injuries and uncertainties within the team, Kafka steps in as the interim head coach. Meanwhile, GM Joe Schoen received a vote of confidence from ownership for his efforts in assembling young talent for the team’s future development.
Looking ahead, Daboll, with his extensive coaching experience, is expected to secure a coaching position within the NFL next season. However, it is unlikely to be an immediate return to Buffalo, as Bills head coach Sean McDermott expressed support for their current offensive coordinator, Joe Brady.
