Emergency responders successfully extricated a worker trapped under debris inside a historic tower in Rome after it partially collapsed during renovation activities. Unfortunately, the worker, identified as Octav Stroici, succumbed to his injuries shortly after being rescued. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed profound condolences for the tragic loss and extended sympathies to the victim’s family and colleagues.

Rescuers, working tirelessly for 11 hours, managed to remove Stroici from the rubble, while another Romanian worker was safely evacuated. The complex operation involved various attempts, including using a crane with tubes to clear debris from the building.

Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri reported that the rescue operation was delicate, with responders proceeding cautiously to prevent further collapses. Despite efforts to save Stroici, he tragically passed away in the hospital.

Three workers were rescued unharmed, while another worker was hospitalized in critical condition after sustaining injuries. The tower, known as Torre dei Conti, has a long history of structural issues, with previous collapses occurring in past centuries.

Officials are conducting investigations to determine the cause of the collapse, with prosecutors looking into potential charges related to negligence. The ongoing restoration work on the tower, valued at $11.1 million, was nearing completion before the incident occurred.

As the community mourns the loss of Stroici, authorities are focusing on ensuring the safety of similar structures undergoing renovation to prevent future tragedies.
