Tensions have escalated among Washington, Denmark, and Greenland this month due to U.S. President Donald Trump’s persistent claims that the vast Arctic island should be under U.S. control, with the consideration of military actions. Trump emphasized the necessity for the U.S. to “acquire Greenland” to prevent Russia or China from doing so, expressing a willingness to negotiate for the territory but asserting U.S. possession eventually.

The statements by Trump have spurred a series of discussions and meetings this week, with uncertainty surrounding the impact of reassurance from other officials if not directly from Trump. Danish and Greenlandic representatives are set to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen cautioning that a potential U.S. takeover of Greenland could jeopardize NATO, a sentiment echoed by Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met with Rubio, emphasizing the importance of NATO allies collaborating for security and affirming that decisions regarding Greenland should involve Denmark and Greenland. However, Danish European Parliament member Anders Vistisen criticized Trump’s rhetoric, stating that it undermines NATO and benefits adversaries like China and Russia.

A bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation, led by Democratic Sen. Chris Coons and including Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, is scheduled to visit Copenhagen to demonstrate solidarity with Denmark. Coons highlighted the enduring alliance between the U.S. and Denmark, particularly in previous joint efforts post-9/11, emphasizing the delegation’s support for NATO and the partnership with Denmark.

In response to Trump’s remarks, Beijing emphasized that the U.S. should not exploit other countries to advance its interests in Greenland. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stressed that China’s activities in the Arctic align with international law, focusing on promoting peace and stability in the region. China’s designation as a “near-Arctic state” in 2018 and its plans for a “Polar Silk Road” as part of the Belt and Road Initiative demonstrate its strategy to enhance influence and economic connections globally.
