Spanish authorities have confirmed that a high-speed train collision in southern Spain has resulted in at least 39 fatalities. The tragic incident occurred when a train carrying around 300 passengers derailed on its route from Malaga to Madrid and collided with another train traveling from Madrid to Huelva. The impact primarily affected the second train, causing its first two carriages to derail and fall down a four-meter slope. It is believed that most of the casualties occurred in these carriages.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with emergency services searching through the wreckage for more victims. The Andalusia regional president described the scene as a mass of twisted metal where the accident took place. He expressed concerns that the death toll may increase as heavy machinery is used to lift the carriages.

Passengers recounted harrowing experiences of climbing out of smashed windows following the collision. Videos and photos showed the aftermath, with train cars overturned and passengers utilizing emergency hammers to escape. Spanish police reported 159 injuries, including five individuals in critical condition and 24 in serious condition.

The cause of the crash, which took place near Adamuz in the province of Cordoba, remains unknown. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez extended his condolences to the victims’ families, acknowledging the profound sorrow felt across the country. In response to the tragedy, a sports center was transformed into a temporary hospital, and the Spanish Red Cross established a support center to aid both emergency responders and individuals seeking assistance.

Spain boasts the largest high-speed rail network in Europe, covering over 3,100 kilometers of track with a strong safety record. Train services between Madrid and Andalusian cities were suspended following the collision. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed solidarity with Spain, stating that her thoughts were with the affected individuals.

As investigations continue and recovery efforts persist, the nation grapples with the aftermath of this devastating train collision.
