“Candy Companies Shrink Halloween Treats Amid Surging Cocoa Prices”

Consumers may face higher prices for Halloween chocolate treats this year as cocoa prices have surged. Some candy companies have quietly reduced the weight of their products, a tactic known as shrinkflation.

A recent investigation by CBC News revealed that major candy makers like Mars Inc. and the Hershey Company have decreased the weight of their Halloween chocolate bar variety packs by nearly 17 percent compared to last year. Despite maintaining the same number of candy bars in these variety packs, the weight reduction may go unnoticed by shoppers.

Companies often cite changing customer preferences as the reason for these adjustments without providing specific examples. Food marketing experts, like Jordan LeBel from Concordia University, point out that businesses resort to such measures to offset higher production costs while maintaining profitability without increasing consumer prices.

The rise in cocoa prices, more than doubling in recent years, has been attributed to adverse weather conditions in West Africa, the primary global cocoa supplier. Small cocoa farms in the region struggle to recover from poor harvests due to financial constraints, resulting in supply shortages.

Statistics Canada reports a 10 percent increase in confectionery item prices, including chocolate, over the past year. Despite these price hikes, online ads from previous years show that some candy products have shrunk in size, with weight reductions ranging from 6.2 to 16.8 percent.

Calls for transparency in product downsizing are growing, especially as consumers grapple with rising grocery costs. Advocates urge food producers to be more forthcoming about changes in product size so that shoppers can make informed choices.

While some countries mandate disclosures on product packaging when items shrink in weight or volume, Canada does not enforce such regulations. Consumer advocates recommend that the government consider implementing similar requirements to ensure transparency in product sizing changes.

Efforts are underway to address shrinkflation concerns in Canada, with the government funding research projects to examine harmful retail practices. Initiatives like the Food Price Data Hub aim to empower consumers with information to navigate grocery shopping amid market changes.
