Saskatchewan Roughriders supporters will soon have the opportunity to prepare their own food and enjoy alcoholic beverages outside Mosaic Stadium, following the introduction of tailgating legislation by the province. The newly proposed Tailgating Act modifies the Alcohol Control Regulations to permit tailgating in a parking lot near the Roughriders stadium during home games.
Craig Reynolds, the CEO and President of the Roughriders, emphasized that the initiative, which will be exclusive to season ticket-holders, is not primarily aimed at increasing the team’s revenue but rather as a gesture of appreciation to the fans. Reynolds anticipates high demand from season ticket members for pregame festivities before heading into the game, creating a lively atmosphere on game days.
The plan is to commence with a limited number of participants and potentially expand the program in the future. If the legislation is approved, supervision of the tailgating area will be managed by staff, likely from Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL), with controlled vehicle access and strict conduct guidelines enforced by the province.
Alana Ross, the minister overseeing the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, highlighted that the regulations will mandate permits and close coordination with SLGA for successful implementation. The collaborative effort aims to ensure a positive experience not only for the Roughriders and the City of Regina but also for all fans attending the games.
Reynolds mentioned that the provincial legislation was developed following discussions with the government earlier this year, prompted by the Roughriders’ interest in introducing tailgating activities. Drawing inspiration from other CFL teams like Calgary and Edmonton, Reynolds also expressed intent to explore tailgating models in different markets, including the famed tailgating culture of the Buffalo Bills, where the Roughriders’ head coach previously played.
The revised regulations are set to be in place for the 2026 CFL season, initially limited to events at Mosaic Stadium during Saskatchewan Roughriders home games. The province has indicated the potential for expansion of eligibility post the 2026 CFL season.
