“Skate Canada International: Figure Skating Spectacular in Saskatoon”

Skate Canada International in Saskatoon this weekend sees top figure skaters from around the world showcasing their skills. The event at SaskTel Centre is the third stop on the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series, featuring 18 Canadian athletes and numerous international stars. The competition spans three days from Friday to Sunday.

Among the Canadian contenders is Madeline Schizas, a three-time national champion securing her Olympic spot in the women’s event. Reflecting on the pressure faced at the world championships, Schizas emphasized the intensity of the competition and the significance of each performance in securing a spot at the Olympics. She expressed confidence in her ability to rise to the challenge and intends to leverage this experience for the upcoming Olympic season.

As a full-time university student, Schizas highlighted the mix of comfort and responsibility that comes with competing in front of a home crowd. Sara-Maude Dupuis, aiming to execute a rare triple axel, acknowledged the energy and support from the local audience during practice.

Canadian skaters Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud shared their joy in performing before a home crowd, emphasizing the motivation drawn from the enthusiastic supporters. The pair, instrumental in securing two Olympic pairs spots, acknowledged the mounting pressure as the Olympics draw near.

Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps, reigning world champions fresh from a pairs silver medal win at the Grand Prix de France, are also participating in the event. The competition kicks off with the women’s and pairs short programs on Friday evening, followed by the men’s and rhythm dance events on Saturday, with the final performances culminating in the victory ceremony on Sunday afternoon.
