Canadian researchers monitoring online misinformation and foreign interference have praised a new feature introduced by X that discloses the geographic location of user accounts. However, they caution that the tool still has some flaws and advise interpreting its findings carefully.

While the capability to reveal accurate locations can help identify fake accounts and foreign entities posing as Canadians to manipulate political discourse, experts highlight potential risks. They note that exposing true locations could endanger individuals like dissidents by revealing their whereabouts or the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) for online communication.

The recent launch of the “about this account” feature by X, formerly known as Twitter, surprised many users. The move triggered a rapid response, prompting some users in the U.S. and Canada to scrutinize accounts with discrepancies between their stated location and actual geographic data.

Several prominent accounts supporting U.S. President Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement were identified as being based in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Nigeria, raising concerns about potential foreign influence on the movement. Similarly, accounts soliciting donations for families in Gaza were found to be located in countries like India.

Notable mismatches in location information were also observed in accounts discussing Canadian politics. For instance, a popular Conservative-leaning account with over 150,000 followers was listed as being located in Italy, while an account advocating for Alberta sovereignty with 15,000 followers was shown as based in Thailand.

Moreover, two out of five federal political parties and media organizations like CBC were inaccurately listed as being situated outside Canada. Although the Conservative, Bloc Québécois, and Green Party accounts were correctly identified as Canadian, the Liberal Party and New Democrat accounts were erroneously placed in the United States.

The discrepancies in location data have sparked responses from party officials, with explanations ranging from the use of VPNs to technical errors. While the new feature has the potential to aid researchers in detecting foreign interference, experts emphasize the need for caution in interpreting the information provided.

Overall, the new tool is seen as a step towards greater transparency on social media platforms. However, it is essential for users to critically assess the accuracy of location data and consider it as one of many tools available to evaluate online content.
