“Darwin’s Suspicions Confirmed: Flowering Plant Revealed as Carnivorous Predator”

In an exclusive interview with botanist Douglas Soltis, it has been revealed that a groundbreaking study has confirmed Charles Darwin’s suspicions from over a century ago – a seemingly harmless flowering plant is actually a carnivorous predator. Soltis, a botanist at the University of Florida, expressed his excitement at potentially receiving approval from Darwin for the discovery of Saxifraga candelabrum, a plant found in the rocky mountain crevices of southwestern China that utilizes its sticky hairs to ensnare and consume unsuspecting insects.

Published in the journal Nature Communications, the study marks 151 years since Darwin’s initial speculation about carnivorous plants within the Saxifraga genus. Many Saxifraga species, including the one under investigation, possess tiny, sticky hairs on their surfaces that attract insects with a sweet scent. The insects become trapped on the plant, a phenomenon that intrigued Darwin in the 19th century.

To confirm the carnivorous nature of the plant, researchers had to demonstrate its ability to digest trapped insects, absorb their nutrients, and distribute these nutrients throughout its system. By utilizing modern laboratory techniques, such as feeding insects labeled substances and tracking nutrient flow within the plant, scientists were able to confirm the plant’s predatory behavior.

The study further explains that nitrogen, a vital nutrient for mountain plants like Saxifraga candelabrum, is acquired through consuming insects. This evolutionary adaptation likely originated from a need to protect seeds from insect predators, eventually evolving into a method to extract nutrients from trapped insects.

Additionally, the study suggests that there may be more undiscovered carnivorous plants, including those within Darwin’s favored Saxifraga genus, waiting to be identified. The discovery of similar carnivorous behavior in a plant in British Columbia’s Cypress Provincial Park supports this notion. This revelation aligns with previous predictions by researchers, indicating a potential for further revelations in the realm of plant carnivory.
