Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed dissatisfaction with Europe’s handling of the Greenland conflict with the U.S., urging the continent to exhibit more bravery. He characterized Europe as a collection of small and medium powers lacking unity.
During a passionate speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Zelenskyy criticized Europe for not taking a leading role in defending global freedom, especially in the absence of U.S. attention. He specifically pointed out Europe’s failure to act decisively against Russian tankers transporting oil that funds the war in Ukraine, contrasting this with recent U.S. actions seizing oil-carrying ships from Venezuela.
While wrapping up his address, reports surfaced that France’s navy, with intelligence support from the UK, intercepted a Russian oil tanker in the Mediterranean Sea. This operation targeted the sanctioned Russian shadow fleet, with French President Emmanuel Macron emphasizing adherence to international maritime laws.
Zelenskyy commended the interception on social media, emphasizing the importance of such resolute actions. He also disclosed plans for trilateral meetings involving Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. in Abu Dhabi to discuss potential compromises, stressing the need for Russian readiness to negotiate.
Following a productive meeting with President Trump on peace talks and air defense supplies, Zelenskyy expressed optimism for further strengthening cooperation. Trump, in turn, lauded the positive discussions with Zelenskyy and emphasized the necessity of ending the war in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, U.S. envoys engaged in talks with Russian President Putin in Moscow, focusing on resolving territorial disputes and pursuing a diplomatic solution. Despite ongoing negotiations and concessions from all sides, challenges persist, particularly regarding territorial boundaries and Donetsk region control.
Zelenskyy faced domestic challenges amidst a severe energy crisis exacerbated by Russian airstrikes, leaving parts of Ukraine without essential services. Recent attacks continued to wreak havoc, with casualties reported in various regions, underscoring the urgent need for a peaceful resolution.
