New monitoring devices for algae will be placed in three different bodies of water on Prince Edward Island this summer in a test initiative aimed at improving the understanding of blue-green algae blooms.
Kyle Knysh, a provincial surface water biologist, mentioned that blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, has been observed throughout the Island in recent times. The three algae trackers will be stationed at MacLures Dam in Murray River, Parsons Creek in Stanhope, and Point Deroche Pond near Blooming Point.
The primary objective of these trackers is to analyze the frequency and duration of blooming conditions, as stated by Knysh. Additionally, they can serve as a tool to monitor potential high levels of the bacteria for public health reasons.
According to the environmental health division of P.E.I., toxins from blue-green algae can impact both human and animal health, with exposure possible through contact with or ingestion of contaminated water. The division cautioned that visible blue-green algae blooms should be avoided, and individuals should adhere to local public health advisories while keeping children and pets away from affected areas.
Knysh highlighted environmental concerns associated with blue-green algae blooms, emphasizing that substantial blooms can lead to the accumulation of organic matter, reducing oxygen levels in water bodies. Climate change, warmer temperatures, nutrient availability, and water stability are contributing factors to the proliferation of blue-green algae.
The introduction of the new algal tracker in Parson’s Creek aims to provide insights into the reasons behind the high levels of bacteria present there compared to other nearby water sources. Recognizable signs of blue-green algae include the water appearing scummy, resembling pea soup, or having the appearance of spilled green paint.
