However, Carney has tempered expectations for the trip following recent tensions stemming from Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s anti-tariff ad campaign invoking Ronald Reagan, which led to a halt in trade discussions.
During a news conference, Carney emphasized the importance of engaging in substantive negotiations rather than focusing on minor interactions. He clarified that discussions between the two countries have not yet resumed, highlighting the need for meaningful dialogues.
Carney underscored that his attendance at the draw is significant for Canada as the country is co-hosting the tournament with the U.S. and Mexico next year. Despite the current pause in talks, he mentioned that he frequently converses with Trump.
Regarding a recent brief exchange with Trump, Carney noted that it was not noteworthy and declined to provide further details to the media. He acknowledged criticisms received for his response of “who cares?” when asked about his interactions with Trump, admitting it was a “poor choice of words.”
The upcoming meeting at the FIFA draw will not mark the first encounter between Trump and Carney since the trade discussions stalled. Following the breakdown of talks, the two leaders acknowledged each other during a dinner toast preceding the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in South Korea, although their interaction was limited.
