“Wildfires, Permafrost Thawing Worsen Climate Change”

A recent study has delved into the escalating impact of wildfires and thawing permafrost on greenhouse gas emissions, expediting climate change beyond current global estimates. These climate feedback loops, triggered by climate change, could contribute an additional 20 to 30 percent of warming in this century, according to researchers from leading U.S. institutions.

The study, published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, sheds light on the significant role of warming-induced emissions in driving global temperature rise. Current climate models primarily focus on emissions from human activities such as burning fossil fuels and waste decomposition, overlooking the additional feedback loops.

Canada, with a substantial share of warming-induced emissions, is particularly vulnerable to these changes. The study emphasizes that the repercussions of climate changes in Canada will not be localized but will have far-reaching global implications.

Rising temperatures due to global warming are accelerating the thawing of permafrost in the Arctic, releasing ancient organic material that was previously locked up. Abrupt thawing, a more localized process triggered by warming and extreme weather events like wildfires, can cause sudden land collapse, releasing significant amounts of carbon.

Moreover, wetlands, which are abundant in Canada, serve as another major source of warming-induced emissions. Methane emissions from wetlands have raised concerns among scientists due to a notable increase in atmospheric methane levels since around 2020. The paper underscores the necessity of incorporating freshwater wetlands into climate models to better understand and mitigate these emissions.

The study urges for enhanced field studies, especially in Canada, to monitor the release of greenhouse gases from thawing permafrost and wetlands. It highlights the critical need to address these feedback loops to align policy targets with the Earth’s response to climate change.
