An Australian child has tragically passed away in a hospital following a shark bite incident in Sydney Harbour, as confirmed by the family on Saturday amidst a spate of shark encounters along the eastern coast of the country.

The victim, Nico Antic, aged 12, was attacked while he and his friends were leaping off rocks in Vaucluse, approximately nine kilometers away from the central business district of Sydney. Following the attack, he was rescued from the water by his companions and transported to the hospital with severe injuries to both of his legs.

In a statement, the family expressed their profound sorrow, announcing the loss of their son, Nico. Describing him as a cheerful, sociable, and athletic young boy with a remarkably kind and generous nature, they fondly remembered him as someone who exuded vibrancy and zest for life.

This unfortunate incident unfolded as a grim backdrop to the closure of numerous beaches, including those in Sydney, due to a string of four shark attacks within a span of two days. The recent heavy rainfall had rendered the waters murky, heightening the risk of shark encounters.

Adding to the somber statistics, a surfer had lost his life to a large shark at Long Reef beach in Sydney back in September. Despite Australia recording an average of 20 shark incidents annually, with only a fraction proving fatal, these figures pale in comparison to the far higher number of drownings that occur on the nation’s beaches.
