The Competition Bureau is set to conduct an inquiry into the impact of competition within the food supply chain on the pricing of groceries for Canadian consumers. This investigation will focus on three main areas: production and processing, transportation and distribution, and retail pricing practices. The bureau aims to gain insights into where intervention may be necessary and identify potential policy measures to enhance affordability.
Interim Commissioner of Competition, Jeanne Pratt, emphasized the significance of food costs to all Canadians and highlighted the role of robust competition in regulating prices. Pratt has urged industry stakeholders to contribute their perspectives on the matter.
The upcoming investigation will expand on the conclusions of the bureau’s 2023 study on the retail grocery market, which suggested that increased competition could lead to price reductions and foster innovation. The final report, anticipated to be released next spring, will present the findings and recommendations to governments regarding strategies to enhance competition throughout the food supply chain.
