The renowned calypso music icon, The Mighty Sparrow, known for popularizing the genre since the 1950s, has passed away at the age of 91. Born as Slinger Francisco, he peacefully departed in New York surrounded by his family after a brief illness, as confirmed by his family. Hailing from Grand Roy, Grenada, Francisco moved to Trinidad and Tobago with his parents at a young age in 1937.

Trinidad and Tobago, the birthplace of calypso music, witnessed the rise of The Mighty Sparrow, who gifted the world with numerous hit songs in the genre, including classics like “Jean and Dinah,” “Both of Them,” “Congo Man,” “Mr. Walker,” and “The Lizard.” The country’s Prime Minister, Kamla Persad Bissessar, praised his contributions, stating that Sparrow’s music carried the spirit and stories of their people globally, shaping the cultural landscape.

Acknowledging his significant impact, Trinidad and Tobago bestowed national honors upon Francisco, with the University of the West Indies awarding him an honorary Doctor of Letters in 1987. Leaders from various nations, including Jamaica, Barbados, and Dominica, paid respects to the legendary artist, recognizing his timeless legacy. Francisco’s extensive career spanned over six decades, during which he recorded hundreds of songs and performed worldwide, even gracing prestigious venues like Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Additionally, The Mighty Sparrow’s influence extended to various themes beyond the party-centric carnival culture, delving into topical and political subjects in songs like “Model Nation,” “Martin Luther King For President,” and “Kennedy and Kruschev.” He also celebrated Toronto’s Caribana festival with the song “Toronto Mas” in 1972 and revisited the city for events like the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014. Notably, his music continues to resonate with audiences, leaving an enduring impact on the calypso art form.
