Over three decades have passed since the Toronto Blue Jays clinched the World Series, and fans nationwide, including those in Saskatchewan, will need to wait another year for a shot at the championship.
The Los Angeles Dodgers secured a 5-4 victory over the Jays in a thrilling Game 7 at Rogers Centre on Saturday night. The game was fiercely contested and extended into extra innings, culminating in a game-winning home run by Dodgers’ catcher Will Smith in the 11th inning, bringing an end to what many have dubbed a historic World Series.
While the outcome was disappointing for Jays enthusiasts, the journey to reach the World Series was unforgettable.
At her home in Battleford, 91-year-old Jane Shury, a lifelong Jays supporter who oversees her town’s Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, watched the game.
Reflecting on the defeat, Shury expressed, “Winning and losing are all part of the game. Despite not reaching our desired outcome, we can take pride in our team. The disappointment we feel is undoubtedly shared by the team.”
According to Shury, the Jays hold a special place in the hearts of Canadians beyond Toronto.
“They are our national team. Therefore, they belong to all of us, not just Toronto,” she noted.
Even in the face of defeat, Shury encouraged younger fans to remain optimistic.
“Life has its highs and lows, and this is one of the lows. However, it’s essential to accept it, look ahead, and strive for a more positive outcome next year. Stay positive because there’s always another opportunity on the horizon,” she advised.
