Blockbuster romance writer Carley Fortune has revealed that her upcoming novel, “Only in Summer,” is set for release on May 18, 2027. This new book will transport readers back to the familiar town of Barry’s Bay, Ont., a setting previously featured in Fortune’s popular works “Every Summer After” and “One Golden Summer,” as well as being her childhood hometown.
Fortune shared in a recent newsletter that the inspiration for “Only in Summer” came after she purchased a cottage near Barry’s Bay, fulfilling her long-held dream since selling her family’s lakefront property. The protagonist of the novel, Eleanor Florek, known as Ellie, also shares a similar aspiration of owning a place in Barry’s Bay. Ellie, the cousin of Charlie and Sam from Fortune’s other Barry’s Bay stories, faces a surprising twist when the neighboring house is demolished for a new mansion construction by an attractive new owner.
While the plot details are still under wraps, it’s anticipated that a captivating romance will develop against the picturesque lakeside backdrop. Carley Fortune, a Toronto-based writer and journalist with an editorial background at Refinery29, The Globe and Mail, Chatelaine, and Toronto Life, has penned previous successful novels like “Our Perfect Storm,” “One Golden Summer,” “Every Summer After,” “This Summer Will Be Different,” and “Meet Me at the Lake.”
“Meet Me at the Lake” was a notable contender on Canada Reads in 2024, endorsed by fashion influencer Mirian Njoh, marking the first romance novel to feature on the show. Additionally, “Every Summer After” was adapted into the Amazon Prime Video series “Every Year After,” recently renewed for a second season, building on the narrative from “One Golden Summer.” Netflix Canada is also in the process of adapting “This Summer Will Be Different” into a 10-episode series.
