Zdeno Chara and Duncan Keith experienced contrasting emotions during a pivotal moment in the 2013 Stanley Cup final. The Boston Bruins were leading 2-1 late in Game 6, aiming to force a decisive Game 7 in Chicago. However, the Chicago Blackhawks scored twice in a stunning 17-second span, clinching a 3-2 victory and their second championship in four years. Reflecting on the game years later, Chara described the turn of events as “shocking but a part of sports and life.”
Keith, on the other hand, was relieved to avoid a pressure-packed Game 7. The two accomplished defensemen, Chara and Keith, will be honored on Monday as part of the 2025 Hockey Hall of Fame class. During the induction ceremony, Keith expressed gratitude for the journey and the support he received along the way.
Joining Chara and Keith in the Hall of Fame are Joe Thornton, Alexander Mogilny, Jennifer Botterill, and Brianna Decker. Additionally, Jack Parker and Danièle Sauvageau will be recognized for their contributions as builders.
Chara, who spent 14 seasons as the Bruins’ captain, played a significant role in Boston’s 2011 Stanley Cup victory. The towering defenseman, known for his physical presence, also excelled internationally, participating in multiple Olympics and world championships. Keith, a key player for the Blackhawks, contributed to three Stanley Cup wins during his 16-season career in Chicago.
Thornton, a former first overall pick, had a successful career spanning over two decades, showcasing his playmaking skills and leadership on various teams. Mogilny, a skilled forward, achieved notable success in the NHL, including a Stanley Cup win with the New Jersey Devils.
Botterill, a decorated Canadian player, enjoyed success at both the Olympics and world championships before transitioning to a career in television. Sauvageau, the first female builder in the Hall of Fame, made significant contributions to women’s hockey and continues to promote the growth of the sport.
Decker, a gold medalist at the 2018 Olympics, has achieved success at both the international and world championship levels. Parker, a highly respected coach, guided the Boston University men’s team to multiple national championships during his illustrious career.
As the inductees reflect on their accomplishments, Chara emphasized the importance of resilience, belief, and pursuing dreams despite challenges along the way.
