Cheng En Du initially felt uncertain when his mother suggested starting weekly neighborhood cleanups. The 14-year-old, along with his parents, relocated from China to Moncton last year. As they adjusted to life in a new country, they received support from many Canadians, according to Du’s mother, Geng Chen.

In gratitude for the assistance they received, the family decided to give back to the community by organizing weekly cleanups. Despite facing language barriers and the challenges of settling in a new place, Chen expressed their determination to contribute positively to their surroundings.

Du shared that he was initially self-conscious about picking up trash with his mother, especially when faced with questioning from onlookers. However, his mother’s encouragement helped him overcome any doubts. The mother-son team has successfully completed eight community cleanups, diligently sorting and disposing of the collected litter.

Their efforts are documented on the Facebook page “Green Guardians Moncton,” where they provide regular updates on their cleanup activities. Chen mentioned that their initiative has not only enhanced the local environment but has also fostered connections within the community.

Despite receiving offers from others to join their cleanups, Chen explained that their busy schedules make it challenging to coordinate fixed cleanup times. Nonetheless, the family remains committed to their volunteer work and aims to continue making a positive impact in their community.

Chen revealed that they plan to exchange the recyclables collected during their cleanups for money, which will be donated to a local food bank. She emphasized the importance of individual contributions in inspiring collective action for the betterment of society.

Du acknowledged the support they have received and emphasized the importance of showing gratitude by giving back to the community. The family’s dedication to volunteerism reflects their desire to contribute meaningfully within their capabilities to the Canadian society.
