Former Liberal cabinet minister Chrystia Freeland has announced her resignation from Parliament on Friday, signaling a significant transition for the party. On Monday, she confirmed her acceptance of a voluntary role advising Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and indicated her departure from Canadian politics in the “coming weeks.” Just two days later, she posted on social media that she would be vacating her seat by the end of the week.

Expressing her dedication to supporting Canada and advocating for Ukraine, a cause deeply personal to her due to her Ukrainian heritage, Freeland highlighted her commitment to these endeavors. She served as deputy prime minister from 2019 to 2024 and was the first female finance minister in Canada’s history, known for her outspoken stance against Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Representing the University-Rosedale district in downtown Toronto since 2015, Freeland faced criticism from the opposition, particularly the Conservatives, who questioned her dual role as an advisor to a foreign government while holding a Canadian parliamentary position. Ethical concerns were raised regarding potential conflicts of interest, although the Conflict of Interest Act in Canada does not explicitly address advising a foreign government.

Freeland sought guidance from the federal ethics commissioner and disclosed her intentions in advance, including plans to resign from her parliamentary seat before taking on the advisory position with President Zelenskyy. Despite initial arrangements for a sequential transition, the announcement was expedited by the Ukrainian side.

Following discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney and her appointment as Canada’s special representative for Ukraine’s reconstruction, Freeland’s resignation will prompt a by-election in her safe Liberal riding in Toronto. Her departure marks the end of an influential chapter within the Liberal Party, where she played a pivotal role in key government initiatives, including trade negotiations and economic management during challenging times.

Amid her impending departure from Canadian politics, Freeland is set to assume the role of CEO at the Rhodes Trust educational charity in the United Kingdom starting July 1, as confirmed by her office.
