Initial findings indicate that a devastating fire at a Swiss ski resort bar on New Year’s Eve, resulting in the deaths of at least 40 individuals and injuring many more, likely originated from “fountain candles” affixed to champagne bottles that were inadvertently brought too close to the ceiling. According to local prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud, the fire rapidly escalated after the burning candles, also known as ‘Bengal lights,’ ignited the surroundings. These candles, commonly used for celebrations like birthdays, played a crucial role in the tragic incident at Le Constellation bar in the high-end Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana.

Authorities are currently examining the compliance of a foam layer in the ceiling, linked to acoustics, with safety regulations but have not reached conclusive determinations. No criminal responsibility has been established as of now. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to identify the deceased individuals, with dental and DNA samples being utilized in the identification process.

Reportedly, 50 injured partygoers, primarily young individuals, are being or will be transferred to specialized burn units across Europe. The total number of injured stands at 119, with 113 already identified. Among the injured are nationals from Switzerland, France, Italy, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Luxembourg, Belgium, Portugal, and Poland, while the nationalities of 14 individuals remain uncertain.

The grieving families of missing individuals have made emotional appeals for information, with embassies collaborating to ascertain the status of their citizens involved in the tragic incident. The painstaking process of identification is expected to take days due to the severity of injuries sustained by the victims.

Swiss officials have reported approximately 40 fatalities, while Italy has cited a death toll of 47 based on Swiss authorities’ information. Investigations are underway to understand the circumstances leading to the fire, including examining previous renovations at the bar, the adequacy of fire safety measures, and building inspection compliance.

Residents of Crans-Montana, renowned for its appeal to skiers and golfers, expressed shock at the tragic event, with many acknowledging their proximity to the victims. The community has come together to mourn the deceased, with gestures of solidarity observed near the bar. Authorities are working diligently to identify all victims and piece together the events that led to the devastating blaze.
