When the term “ocean sunfish” comes up, one may not envision a creature weighing up to two tonnes and adorned with parasites, even on its eyes. In a recent exploration on The Nature of Things 101, Sarika Cullis-Suzuki delves into the fascinating world of what could be the most peculiar fish globally.

Cullis-Suzuki expresses her admiration for this fish that defies conventional fish appearances with its massive circular body, absence of a tail, and enormous fins. Through a life-sized model demonstration, she showcases to co-host Anthony Morgan the unique features that make the Mola mola, a species of ocean sunfish and among the largest fish in the ocean, truly remarkable.

These fish are renowned for their extensive travels, venturing hundreds of meters deep multiple times daily in search of sustenance. However, due to their leisurely pace, large surface area, and movement through various water layers, they are prone to attracting parasites.

“This fish is riddled with parasites all over — on its skin, gills, fins, eyeballs, mouth, and intestines,” Cullis-Suzuki explains, highlighting the variety of parasites infesting the Mola mola and other ocean sunfish species, with some parasites even hosting their own parasites.

The method through which sunfish combat these parasites includes breaching, where they leap out of the water and crash back down, potentially to dislodge parasites. Additionally, they permit smaller fish and birds to feed on the parasites.

Despite the existing knowledge about ocean sunfish, this species remains ripe for further exploration. Cullis-Suzuki emphasizes the necessity for continued research, stating, “There is still so much more to learn.”
