In a casual chat during a gaming convention in 2012, a board game creator challenged mathematician Eric Harshbarger to devise unique dice that could definitively determine the starting player without the chance of a tie. The aim was to expedite the game’s commencement. Harshbarger, a senior lecturer and mathematician at Auburn University, found the puzzle intriguing and embarked on finding a solution.
After years of collaboration with computer scientists and mathematicians worldwide, Harshbarger and his team successfully created a set of dice known as the Go First Dice for five players. These innovative dice ensure a fair selection process for the starting player with a guaranteed winner from a single roll.
While the concept seemed straightforward in theory, the practical implementation of the dice posed a significant challenge. The team initially designed a set of four 12-sided dice, which provided fair outcomes for two, three, or four players. However, devising a solution for five players proved to be a more complex task.
Through persistent efforts and collaboration, the team developed a set of five 120-sided dice, spearheaded by a breakthrough from a Canadian software engineer, Paul Meyer.
