A Food Basics store will take over a Metro grocery store in Ottawa’s South Keys area this autumn, resulting in job losses for numerous employees. Metro Inc. stated that the closure of the store on Wednesday is part of the conversion to better serve the local customer base with a discount banner. The decision, communicated to staff in May, was attributed to financial pressures such as increased rent and profitability concerns. Despite the shock to Southgate Metro employees, Metro insisted the switch was driven by market conditions and customer demands. The closure affects 72 employees, who, as per the collective agreement, cannot transfer to other Metro locations but can apply for positions at the new Food Basics store. The new Food Basics store is mandated to hire a minimum number of former Southgate Metro employees based on their part-time and full-time status, with seniority taken into account in the wage structure transition. The United Food and Commercial Workers union negotiated enhanced options for affected members, including job opportunities at the new store and improved severance benefits. While legal experts suggest potential challenges over work shortage claims, settlements between the union and the employer could resolve the situation. Despite the uncertainties, impacted employees like Justin Braganza are left grappling with the aftermath and the relationships forged at the soon-to-be shuttered store.
