Justice Minister Sean Fraser emphasized the importance of unity and respect on a global scale during his speech at the Halifax International Security Forum. Without directly mentioning U.S. President Donald Trump, Fraser addressed the controversy surrounding Trump’s characterization of Canada as the 51st state, which stirred anger among Canadians across political affiliations.

Fraser expressed concern over the strain on the longstanding trade relationship between Canada and the U.S., cautioning against jeopardizing a historical alliance for short-term political gains. He warned against damaging long-term relationships for immediate political benefits, as it could empower future leaders with divisive ideologies.

The panel discussion, titled “Democracies Demand Decency,” also featured U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer, who criticized a video montage highlighting derogatory remarks made by Trump towards political figures. Cramer denounced the video as “indecent” and argued that focusing solely on attacking Trump does not foster positive relationships.

Regarding global issues such as the conflict in Ukraine, the treatment of Uyghurs in China, and terrorism in Nigeria, the panelists stressed the importance of maintaining diplomatic relationships and providing aid to allies. Fraser highlighted the role of independent media and the judiciary in promoting informed discussions and combatting misinformation.

The panel underscored the significance of political civility and the erosion of decency in public discourse. Fraser urged individuals to engage with differing perspectives constructively rather than viewing opponents as enemies. Strengthening institutions like the media and the courts was identified as a vital step towards addressing societal challenges collectively.

The discussion at the forum aimed to address the need for respectful dialogue in the face of increasing polarization and emphasized the role of institutions in fostering understanding and unity in an ever-changing global landscape.
