A recent study reveals that a dinosaur skull discovered at a British Columbia campground belonged to a lighter and faster tyrannosaur compared to the renowned T. rex. Researchers from the University of Alberta analyzed a partial skull impression dating back 76 million years, identifying it as a Gorgosaurus species. Lead author Colton Coppock explained that distinct characteristics on the impression allowed them to make this identification.
The Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta states that Gorgosaurus could grow up to nine meters long. The exploration into this dinosaur’s identity began when B.C. resident Rick Lambert stumbled upon a peculiar rock in Tumbler Ridge in 2017. Lambert, guided by a squirrel near the river’s edge, unknowingly discovered B.C.’s first tyrannosaurus skull. The Tumbler Ridge Museum Foundation confirmed the finding, marking it as a significant discovery for the region.
The detailed cast derived from the skull impression included the maxilla, or upper jaw, of the dinosaur. Despite erosion affecting the bone, the well-maintained impression enabled researchers to create an intricate cast showcasing the skull’s unique features. Coppock’s team linked the partial skull to Gorgosaurus through various clues, such as distinct bone sutures and dental characteristics indicating a juvenile age at death.
The study also disclosed that Gorgosaurus roamed a broader area than previously assumed, with a range extending from northern British Columbia to northern Montana, covering approximately 198,000 square kilometers. This finding suggests a more extensive habitat for the species, akin to the territories of grizzly bears and cougars today.
The discovery underscores British Columbia’s potential as a promising site for future dinosaur excavations. According to Coppock, the province offers a new frontier for dinosaur research. Lambert, reflecting on his find, emphasized the significance of such discoveries in showcasing the Earth’s enduring history and the marvels of ancient life.
